Wharton County, Texas,  600 MWac BESS and 345kV Substation

32

This utility-scale installation in Wharton County, Texas, integrates a 600 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 345 kV substation to provide large-scale grid support and enhance renewable energy integration.

The BESS consists of 480 Wärtsilä GridSolv Quantum battery units paired with 84 Power Electronics FREEMAQ FP4200 Power Conversion System (PCS) modules, configured to deliver high-capacity energy storage, efficient charge/discharge cycling, and fast-response grid stabilization. This system enables peak shaving, frequency regulation, and optimized renewable energy dispatch, supporting overall grid reliability.

The 345 kV substation functions as the primary interconnection point between the BESS and the regional transmission network. It is equipped with three main power transformers, 20 low-side breakers for BESS and PV circuits, and four high-side breakers safeguarding the transmission interface. Integrated protection, control, and SCADA systems provide real-time monitoring, automation, and fault management, ensuring compliance with IEEE, NERC, and utility standards.
